CLYDE river pilots went on strike this morning in a dispute over pay and conditions. The angry workers, responsible for the safe passage of ships along the length of the Clyde, began the two-day strike at 6am at Greenock’s Ocean Terminal. Clydeport bosses say a contingency plan is in place and there will be no effect on commercial shipping. Union organisers revealed Clydeport brought traffic involving navy ships forward 24 hours and believe at least one commercial ship has been put through without a pilot. Andy McFarlane, regional organiser of union Unite, said members believed there had also been a culture of intimidation and bullying. He said: “The pilots do an important job bringing ships along the Clyde where they need to be pinpoint in what they do. “That is being compromised by the pressures put on them, to the extent they are concerned about an accident happening. “These are professionals who haven’t taken this decision lightly. It is regrettable. as this is the first time this has happened in living memory.” In total, seven boat pilots walked out this morning. They are due to return to work at 6am on Saturday. A Clydeport spokesman said: “The decision to go ahead with this strike is regrettable, but we are confident it will not affect shipping on the Clyde as arrangements have been made for pilot cover. “Clydeport remains committed to finding a solution to this issue and will continue negotiations with the pilots and Unite.” « Back |
